City & Guilds 6150 Schemes Explained |
If you have any questions regarding
which course you need please contact us for advice. |
|
|
| If the operative is going to check meter pits of no
more than around 1200mm deep with easy access openings
and would not really need any more than a gas detector
as standing up in an alarm situation would render them
safe then they will need to take an 01 course.
This only allows for working in NC1
confined spaces. |
|
|
|
| If the operative is required to enter any tank, chamber,
or room that has a restricted air flow but would expect
the atmosphere to at least start off as safe then they
would require the 02 course. The 02 course will teach
how to use the gas monitor, escape set, tripod, winch
harness and other associated confined space entry equipment.
It will build a basic awareness of how to formulate a
risk assessment and spot potential hazards. It allows
for the operatives to disconnect from the winch as a working
party but the escape time must be considered so that all
entrants have sufficient time if an alarm or event occurs
that all can exit safely. This allows for entrance
to NC1, NC2 and
NC3 confined spaces. |
|
|
|
| This course will be where operatives have a know risk
which may be from many aspects, not just a gas alarm.
This could be where there are multiple obstacles or work
load could cause exhaustion. It may be an area where there
is a known gas risk or that the entry classification is
NC4. This event will cover all of the 01 and 02 content,
along with a more in depth risk assessment and the inclusion
of wearing full breathing apparatus combined with basic
emergency first aid. All of the attendants should be medically
fit and have a level 2 medical although they will only
have to sign a self certification to take the course.
All operatives must be clean shaven as this is a requirement
of the legislation. This allows entrance to all
classifications (NC1, NC2,
NC3 and NC4) and
includes entrance wearing full breathing apparatus to
carry out the task in hostile environments. |
|
|
|
| This is designed to instil a full awareness of how to
formulate a risk assessment and all that would be required
from leaving the office to completing the task at site.
Office based managers and foremen are ideally suited to
this course. This event is run as either a 2 day package,
designed for people with a fairly good knowledge of confined
space entry or as a 3 day package. The 3 day package includes
the 02 practical training but not the assessment, this
is designed for people with little experience of confined
spaces. The 04 OVERSEEING event does not give
a certification that will allow entry to a confined space. |
|
|
|
| This event will train the operatives in risk assessment
and how to plan and carry out a comprehensive search and
rescue. This event requires a level 1 medical. It will
instil all the knowledge required to deal with situations
as they arise and how to document all details. It
should be remembered that rescue plans are required for
all entrance into confined spaces but that rescue teams
may be required in any situation where the operatives
detach from the winch line. |

Entry Definitions & Equipment Requirements
Entry definitions as laid down
by City & Guilds and Water UK |
|
NC1 Low Risk Confined
Spaces
|

|
| Shallow entry with adequate natural or
mechanical ventilation, where access is simple and unobstructed
and there is no likely risk of flooding. Good examples
of this are meter pits, valve chambers, booster pumping
stations and PRV chambers. |
| Equipment Required for NC1 Confined
Space Entry |
- Personal protective clothing; overalls, waterproofs
and gloves etc.
- Portable gas monitor capable of detecting low oxygen,
explosive and appropriate toxic atmospheres.
- Explosion protected lighting if required.
- Mechanical ventilation if required
|
| Hire the equipment
you need for NC1 entry |
|
|
NC2 Medium Risk
Confined Spaces |

|
| Vertical direct unobstructed access with
continuous attachment to a man riding hoist or similar
mechanical rescue devise. |
| Equipment Required for NC2 Confined
Space Entry |
- Personal protective clothing; overalls, waterproofs
and gloves etc
- Portable gas monitor capable of detecting low oxygen,
explosive and appropriate toxic atmospheres.
- Hand line for lowering tools etc
- Mechanical fall arrest retrieve block if step irons
or ladders are used, if not a full man riding winch.
For NC2 the operative must not disconnect from the
winch line.
- Appropriate full body harness.
- Escape breathing apparatus.
- Means of calling for emergency services.
- Explosion protected lighting if required.
- Mechanical ventilation if required
|
| Hire the equipment
you need for NC2 entry |
|
|
NC3 Medium Risk
Confined Spaces |

|
| When it is not possible to have persons
permanently attached to a safety line. Usually it will
be a team entry which moves away from the entry point.
This situation can be, man entry sewers, utility service
subway tunnels, aqueducts and complex wet wells. Working
without an attached rescue line and includes working away
from the point of entry. |
| Equipment Required for NC3 Confined
Space Entry |
- Personal protective clothing; overalls, waterproofs
and gloves etc
- Portable gas monitor capable of detecting low oxygen,
explosive and appropriate toxic atmospheres.
- Hand line for lowering tools etc
- Mechanical full man riding winch. For NC3 the operative
can disconnect from the winch line and there can be
multiple entrants.
- Appropriate full body harness.
- Escape breathing apparatus for all who enter.
- Means of calling for emergency services.
- Means of communication with team members.
- Explosion protected lighting if required.
- Mechanical ventilation if required
- Personal protective clothing; overalls, waterproofs
and gloves etc
- Where disconnection is made there must be a rescue
team available in the event of an emergency. This
team must hold the 6150-05 Emergency Rescue accreditation.

NC4 High Risk Confined
Spaces |

|
Non standard entries involving complex
operations which introduce additional risks and require
specific control and rescue arrangements. These can
come from mechanical hazards, physical complexity of
system introduced hazards and enhanced specific intrinsic
hazards.
Note: All operatives must be trained
in the use of full breathing apparatus. |
| Equipment Required for NC4 Confined
Space Entry |
- Personal protective clothing; overalls, waterproofs
and gloves etc
- Portable gas monitor capable of detecting low oxygen,
explosive and appropriate toxic atmospheres.
- Hand line for lowering tools etc
- Mechanical full man riding winch. For NC3 the operative
can disconnect from the winch line and there can be
multiple entrants.
- Appropriate full body harness.
- Full breathing apparatus sets for all who enter
(a minimum of 2 personnel to be catered for).
- Means of calling for emergency services.
- Means of communication with team members.
- Explosion protected lighting if required.
- Mechanical ventilation if required this may need
to explosion protected
- Personal protective clothing; overalls, waterproofs
and gloves etc
- Where disconnection is made there must be a rescue
team available in the event of an emergency. This
team must hold the 6150-05 Emergency Rescue accreditation.
