Remember that a risk assessment is vital
for any aspect of fall protection. Having all the equipment on site
and having a fall which lands you on an object, or leaves you hanging
in the wind may only add to, or increase the chances of injury or
death.
Particular care should be taken when using lanyards as they have
a fixed distance that you can fall, unlike fall arrest blocks which
will activate immediately and limit the distance that you can travel.
The image shows how to calculate your fall distance using a 2 metre
lanyard with shock absorbing pack, remember that 2 metres is the
longest fixed length lanyard you can use but there are many shorter
ones available.
As you can see, trying to get your anchorage point above you will
help limit the possible fall distance.
It is imperative that the weight of the operative does not exceed
the maximum tested load of the equipment supplied. The tested working
limits are shown on all European approved fall arrest products.
